The Secret to Glowing Skin

Who doesn't want glowing skin? Here is how to achieve the glow you've always hoped for.

If you're like most people, you're not using the right skin care products for your face. Additionally, you likely don't have a skin care regime that includes all the steps you need to take to achieve a healthy glow. Change that today and use the advice shared here to take your skin from dull to glowing in a matter of minutes.

Use a Gentle Exfoliator

Too many people exfoliate only once or a twice a week, if they exfoliate at all. However, with a gentle exfoliating cleanser, it makes sense to incorporate this step into your morning and nighttime skin care regime.

Exfoliating is the first essential step to achieving a glowing complexion as it's this step that removes dry and dead skin cells, both of which have the tendency to clog pores. Exfoliation also promotes the regeneration of new, healthy skin cells and thereby reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, all of which give the appearance of old age.

There are dozens of exfoliators available on the market, so it's important that you do your research and find one that is best for your skin type and your daily routine. Some exfoliants, such as the Obagi360 Exfoliating Cleanser, are designed for daily use. If you use a physical exfoliant like Obagi360's, gently massage it into your skin using only your fingertips and circular motions.

Other exfoliants such as the Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Night Cream work overnight. Apply this type of chemical peel overnight and peel it off in the morning to reveal softer, smoother and younger looking skin.

Apply Toner

Toner is one of the most underappreciated skin care products on the market, but it also happens to be one of the most effective for obtaining glowing skin. Apply toner immediately after cleansing your face and before applying serum or moisturizer. Doing so will allow both of the latter products to penetrate deeper into the skin and work wonders.

Massage in a Serum

Before you apply your makeup for the day, massage in a serum that contains Vitamin C and THD Ascorbate. Vitamin C targets free radical damage, lightens brown spots and evens out the complexion, while THD Ascorbate tightens, firms and smooths the skin. Use a serum such as Peter Thomas Roth Potent C Serum, which contains 50 times more Vitamin C than traditional sources as well as small amounts of Ferulic Acid, which helps your skin absorb the vitamins more quickly.

The right serum is light enough to wear under your makeup but effective enough to reduce the need for makeup should you decide to go au natural for the day. It should also absorb quickly into the skin so, if you do want to apply foundation, blush or other products, you can do so almost immediately.

Protect and Moisturize

Once you've applied the serum and before you apply your makeup, apply a daily hydrating moisture cream that contains SPF. Applying moisture cream is a necessary step if you hope to obtain glowing skin, as the right cream can help smooth your complexion and rid it of oil and shine.

There are dozens of moisturizers on the market, so it's important to do your research and find one that is ideal for your skin tone. For instance, a cream designed for dry skin won't work well if you produce a lot of oil. Also, bear in mind that your skin's needs will change with the seasons, so you may need two or three different creams.

You should have one moisture cream for daytime use, which should contain SPF, such as Image Skincare Prevention Plus Daily Hydrating SPF30 Moisturizer. UV rays are extremely damaging to the skin and can age your appearance quickly and drastically. The right cream will not only provide immediate results, but the benefits will also be long-lasting.

Your night cream doesn't need to contain SPF but it should contain hyaluronic-acid, which delivers long-lasting moisture while you sleep. Ideally, it should also contain Vitamin A, which helps alleviate itchiness and dryness. Check out Derma-E Hydrating Night Cream and others like it.

Wash Away the Day

One of the cardinal rules all skin care gurus abide by is, never go to bed with your makeup on. Doing so will undo any good you achieved with your morning regime.

Your skin needs to breathe overnight, something it cannot do if it's weighed down with makeup. When you sleep with makeup on, your pores become clogged, which leads to blackheads and blemishes.

If you wear makeup, wash your face with a removal facial cleanser before you settle down for the night. This cleanser should rid your pores of all the product, grit and grime they're exposed to on a daily basis.

If you don't wear makeup, consider something a little gentler, such as one that is sulfate, paraben and acid-free. The best cleansing products for glowing skin will balance your skin pH and improve your overall complexion.

Use a Mask

Just like you should use a hair mask weekly, so too should you use a face mask every five to seven days. Whether or not you wear makeup, your skin is exposed to a lot of contaminants throughout the day. The right face mask can hydrate your skin, remove excess oils and free your pores of dirt, makeup and other impurities.

In addition to cleansing and hydrating your skin, a face mask, especially one with mint properties, can help stimulate blood flow. The process of the mask hardening on your skin and then the removal of the mask causes the blood vessels in your face to expand, which leads to the desired glow. However, your skin won't just look healthy and radiant, but it will feel smoother as well.

All that said, face masks aren't just healthy for your skin. They're healthy for your overall well being, too, as the process of pampering your face in such a way is relaxing and therapeutic.

Unclog Your Pores

Your pores can make or break your complexion, which is why you should give them extra attention. You may have noticed that every step you take involves cleansing your pores to some extent. Take that to the next level once a week or so with pore strips.

Your pores may look okay now, but think about how much background noise they're housing. Pore strips can help remove those little things that may be unnoticeable to the naked eye but that dull your complexion just ever so slightly. Once you rip away that first strip, your face will look notably brighter.

Eat Right

All the products for glowing skin in the world will be ineffective if you lead an unhealthy lifestyle. Certain foods contain vitamins and nutrients that promote radiant skin.

For instance, tomatoes contain Lycopene, which promotes collagen production. Carrots contain beta-carotene and Vitamin A, two antioxidants that prevent the overproduction of cells on the skin's outer layer. Salmon contains dimethylaminoethanol, which strengthens cell membranes and protects against deterioration and premature aging.

There are dozens of foods you can eat that promote healthy skin production and prevent premature aging. However, there are also dozens more that you shouldn't eat. For instance, skin care professionals recommend against eating spicy and fermented foods, citrus or fried foods.

Exercise Regularly

There is no time when exercise is not the answer. Exercising isn't just great for weight loss, heart health and your mood, but it's also great for your complexion.

Whether your exercise of choice is running, jogging, yoga or kickboxing, a little bit of movement can get your heart pumping and your blood circulating. Movement also prompts the cleaning process and pushes impurities out through your pores. After you take a nice jog around the block or sweat through a yoga session, you will notice that your skin has more color and a subtle glow.

After you exercise, don't forget to wash your face with your exfoliator or cleanser. Because sweat contains salt, which can dry out the skin, you should also apply a toner and moisturizer before going about the rest of your day.

The secret to glowing skin is really no secret – it just involves the right skin care products and a strict regime. Though washing, toning, hydrating and protecting may seem like a lot of work at first, after a few days, keeping up with your routine will become normal and therefore easy. It will also be well worth it as after just a few days, your complexion will be noticeably brighter and healthier.
